Waycross College’s enrollment has seen an increase for the fourth straight semester and has broken a record in the process.
According to information released by the college’s admissions and records office, enrollment at the beginning of the spring 2010 semester is a record 1,178 students, shattering the old record of 1,077 set during the fall 2009 semester. This represents a nine percent increase from fall and a 25 percent increase from one year ago.
“We’re so pleased enrollment is growing at Waycross College,” said Dr. David Palmer, president of WC. “We have fifty-percent more high school students taking college-level courses. The number of students who have withdrawn from school this year is at a record low, which is even more good news. Our students are appreciating good teaching and the many other improved facets of student life on campus.”
Dr. Neil Aspinwall, vice president of enrollment and student services, is also pleased to see the enrollment streak continue. He said the nine percent increase from fall to spring is particularly noteworthy as the usual trend is to see a dip in spring enrollment.
“The fall semester is typically the largest semester of enrollment (in an academic year). It is astounding that our spring semester enrollment is larger than fall,” he said.
Aspinwall attributed the record-breaking numbers to the work of the college’s faculty and staff as well as WC’s focus on bettering students’ overall campus experience.
“We’ve made many changes in an effort to better meet the needs of our students,” he said. “We, as an institutional family, strive to remove all obstacles that prevent our students from becoming successful. Our strategy is obviously working because not only is enrollment growing but our retention rate is increasing.”
The recent enrollment success is indicative of the fact that WC has remained true to its mission of preparing students academically. Aspinwall said more and more people in Waycross and the surrounding area are taking advantage of this preparation as they seek to fulfill their college and career goals.
“The citizens of southeast Georgia have come to realize that Waycross College provides an excellent foundation for success to those who wish to pursue a four-year or graduate degree,” he said.
Waycross College has been a proud member of the University System of Georgia since the College’s founding in 1976.
