Pierce County High School wins Waycross College Math Tournament

March 10, 2010

Members of Team A from Pierce County High School captured first place in the varsity competition during the sixth annual Waycross College Math Tournament Feb. 26.

Team B from Pierce County took second place while Team A from Wayne County placed third in the varsity competition.

Varsity and junior varsity teams from five area high schools – Brantley County, Pierce County, Ware County, Ware Magnet, and Wayne County – competed in team and individual categories during the event.

Students participated in a 75-minute written exam which covered algebra, calculus, geometry, statistics, and trigonometry. Junior varsity team members answered questions from algebra and geometry.

Following the written exam, varsity members participated in a team-oriented "ciphering round". All teams were given the same ten questions and three minutes to answer each one. The quicker the teams answered each question correctly, the more points they received.

For varsity teams, winners were determined by a combination of scores from the written exam and the ciphering round. Junior varsity winners were determined through the written exam only.

In the junior varsity category, Team A from Ware County, Brantley County, and Pierce County finished first, second, and third, respectively.

Leonard Smith from Ware County captured first place in the individual varsity competition. Roarke Tholen from Pierce County and Mitchell Cox from Ware Magnet finished second and third, respectively.

In the individual junior varsity competition, Molly Smith of Ware County took first place with Connor O'Brian from Ware Magnet coming in second. George Saussy from Ware County rounded out the top three.

Dr. Lisa Howell, associate professor of mathematics at Waycross College and tournament coordinator, called the event a success and said more teams participated this year than ever before.

"We had a record number of both varsity and junior varsity teams competing from five area high schools," said Howell. "The large number of participants made this year's tournament one of the most exciting ever."

Howell said she and her team of volunteers are looking forward to hosting the event again in 2011.

Waycross College has been a proud member of the University System of Georgia since the College's founding in 1976.
